Leaving Class Frequently
The most common problem raised by a teacher is that the child (student) leaves the class very frequently during the lectures for many reasons like- going to washroom, meeting some teacher, or just roam in the school area and premises. This might happen when the child has inattention tendencies in class, or doesn’t wish to sit for a particular lecture showing disinterest towards it. So, leaving a class frequently can show their anxiety, anger, frustration and denial mood which can affect the academic performance and their mental health. With the teacher’s referral, the parents or other caregivers can seek professional help.
Inability to Study
An extensive number of parents complain about this problem that their child lacks focus and can’t concentrate while studying and mostly gets lost (mentally/ day dreaming) when reading or writing. This might happen due to the child’s hyperactivity, lack of focus, lack of confidence or over confidence, improper study habits and many more. Through proper guidance from the school teacher and an expert, the child can succeed and excel in their academic performance without any difficulties.
Learning Difficulties or Disabilities
Learning difficulties make it difficult for the child to read or write, do simple math sums and also affect their nonverbal skills. In the long run, if left undiagnosed or untreated, it might affect the child’s motivation and self-esteem. Severe difficulties can lead to learning disorders like dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and dyspraxia. Early interventions can improve the child’s learning and reading skills and can lead to a better academic performance.
Inattention in Classroom Setting
Many times it is seen that teachers seem to complain about children being inattentive in classroom setting or online learning setting. Children appear to be distracted, confused, disinterested and have to be frequently redirected to the instructions. They are unable to focus and stay on a task. This has a negative effect on the child’s academic performance. Right interventions can help the child increase his attention span and boost his academic performance.
Competition Amongst Children in School or Home
The most common debate is whether competition among children is healthy or unhealthy. The effects of competition are both positive and negative. The positive effects are that the child actively participates to get better grades and fulfil their dreams. However, negative effects among children can be seen through nervousness, self-blame attitude, creating a negative self-image. The children need to learn that failure is the integral part of life and must convert it into a stepping stone towards success. With proper help, the students can be directed in learning together to get knowledge and not competing to see who scores better.
Inappropriate Classroom Setting
A child might face problems when there is an inappropriate classroom setting. The classroom setting and its environment plays an important role in the behaviour pattern of the child. The classroom must be comfortable for the child with enough spacious area, fresh air, fresh light etc. Secondly, the child and teacher relationship also plays an important role. Such inappropriate setting for online classes would lead to distraction and lack of concentration in the students. In the long run, this has an effect on the child’s academic performance. With proper interventions, the child (student) can improve their academics and personality with the support of their parents and teachers.
Exam Stress and Anxiety
Exam stress and anxiety are common issues seen in children nowadays. Sometimes, this anxiety is good source of a gentle push and motivation for the child. However, severe anxiety among children can lead to depression and might affect their eating and sleeping habits. Few children also have a tendency of remaining absent or showing to be ill during the exam period to avoid the exam. In the long run, these children happen to drop out from school/ college due to low confidence and low self-esteem. Proper study tips and management of anxiety from an expert shall be helpful to the child to deal with exam stress.
Parental Pressure for Excellent Academic Performance
According to a child, the greatest academic stressors are the exams, surprise tests, grades, homework and class work competition. But, the most common stressor faced by a child is the parental pressure for excellent academic performance. In the world of competition, it is commonly seen among children and parents. To overcome this anxiety and stress, few children tend to copy during exams and cheat their parents by scoring higher marks. To cope with this, the expert directs the parents and the child to focus on the child’s capacities and abilities and focus on learning and not on marks.
